The 5 Dirtiest Hot Spots in Your Fitness Center and How to Clean Them
Perspiration, frequent touching of equipment and high-traffic areas can create a breeding ground for a variety of viruses and bacteria. Keep your employees, members and guests safe with a cleaning and housekeeping program designed specifically for your facility. We have identified five hot spot areas you probably have in your fitness center, and determined the best practices for taking care of those areas.
1. ENTRANCES
Whether attracting potential new members or keeping longtime members satisfied, you want to make the best impression possible. How do you make the best first impression? Make sure surfaces, such as floors, counters, desks and tables, are cleaned and disinfected regularly. Sanitize soft surfaces like furniture, curtains and carpets. Create an ambient and inviting atmosphere with added fragrance solutions for any size area. Lastly, place hand sanitizing stations at entrances to promote hand hygiene upon entry to your facility to help protect staff and members.
2. WORKOUT AREAS
At the heart of your facility is the workout area. And we bet there are a variety of soft, porous and hard, nonporous surfaces throughout. With members constantly coming in and out of this area, regularly clean and disinfect this area to prevent soils and germs on surfaces. Using a one-step disinfectant and cleaner can help cut down on cleaning time. Remember to wipe down mirrors and keep them streak-free. This is another good area to place hand sanitizing stations due to the amount of high-touch surfaces. Workout areas can be a breeding ground for malodors, so implementing ambient scent solutions can help keep your facility smelling fresh the get-go.
3. EQUIPMENT
Regular cleaning and maintenance will keep machines in use, cutting down on time machines are out of service for repairs. Clean cardio machines, weight machines and free weights down at the beginning and end of each day. Place disinfecting wipes around the area to encourage members to wipe down and clean equipment after each use. Over time and with regular use, machines will start to show signs of wear. Using lubricants will keep machines rotating and working as they are supposed to. Gym mats can be treated the same way as other soft surfaces, with either disinfecting wipes or a soft surface sanitizing spray.
4. LOCKER ROOMS
Keep guest spaces, such as locker rooms in top shape to improve guest satisfaction. Clean all visible soils off surfaces such as lockers, benches, counters and changing rooms before disinfecting these surfaces. Keep mirrors clean and streak-free by regularly wiping them down with glass cleaner. This is another great place to place hand hygiene stations — whether that be hand sanitizer or hand soap for hand washing areas.
5. RESTROOMS
Restrooms are a telltale sign of the cleanliness of your facility. We recommend adding more regular restroom cleanings to your daily cleaning routines. A foaming lactic acid bathroom cleaner can be used on a variety of surfaces such as toilet bowls, urinals, showers, faucets, countertops and sinks. Restrooms surfaces are extremely important to disinfect regularly after cleaning. Ensure proper hand hygiene by placing hand soap at all sinks and putting hand sanitizer near entrances near high-traffic areas.
